“AMERICANA_RECALL” is a group art exhibit that presents a multi-view reflection of how “AMERICANA” has shaped and evolved our culture. Through the lens of contemporary art, the artists’ work offers a second look at nostalgic themes such as: identity in portraiture, quilting, pop music, quality of life, toys, and the evolution of their relevance. The exhibit addresses themes of substitution, reparation, and mutation, presenting social commentary that is both personal and political.

“AMERICANA” is a nostalgic concept that connects all of us, often influenced by where and what someone calls home and their cultural surroundings. Every generation will view “AMERICANA” differently. For instance, teenagers today may not be influenced by familiar symbols like Elvis Presley and drive-in movies, but they are highly memorable for those who grew up in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s.

In the last century, some argue that “AMERICANA” has devolved from a positively presented image of hope and opportunities to one of distrust and reexamination of our society. For example, immigrants and US citizens view the Statue of Liberty much differently today than in 1887 when it was gifted to our country. On the opposite side of the coin, a sense of community grows stronger in the face of natural disasters: covid, devastating fires and floods

The intention of the show is to “RECALL” American iconography, much like a product in review. This iconography has taken form through American symbols of freedom, celebrities, and entrepreneurial spirit.
